Late Night

By Frans | Follow me on TWITTER | Comment

“A lightning flash then night”
Charles Baudelaire

In this week’s video, you will be listening to my rendition of the Foals’ “Late Night from their new album Holy Fire.

A cry in the night. In "Late Night", Foals singer Yannis Philippakis sings about his mother who ran away.

Many songs have been written about mothers:

In order to include some crying in the latter, it is said that Berlin producer Bob Ezrin told his own kids that their mother had died in a horrible accident.

Thrasher

By Frans | Follow me on TWITTER | Comment

“With a one-way ticket to the land of truth and my suitcase in my hand”

Here is a video recorded at the BMC, Balcony Music Club, in New Orleans in 2010 by French blogger Fabien.

The song is “Thrasher”, written by Neil Young and featured on one of the best albums of all time: Rust Never Sleeps.

Rust Never Sleeps seems to have had a great influence, to say the least, Kurt Cobain who thought it was “better to burn out, than it is to rust”.

This album is a key to understand the Loner’s work who relentlessly tries to avoid repetition no matter the cost in terms of followers.

One of his greatest fears being ending up like Perry Como who’s never been able to reinvent himself.

Fear of treading water is something I know, as you may have noticed. But on the other hand, constantly running off in all directions only  gives ourselves the illusion of moving forward.

As Paul Fussel says : “before the development of tourism, travel was considered to be like a study, and its fruits were considered to be the adornment of the mind and the formation of the judgment” (Abroad).

What an unbridgeable gap between this conception and our few weeks of vacation taken every year to forget about what keeps us chained the remainder of the year.

I’ve myself been guilty of working on best return on investment schemes, like visiting 14 cities in 10 days on a 3,213.2 mile road trip.

Indie folkster on the road in mexico

Which leads us to Marcel Proust, as always:

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

Any questions?
